Harry House with Megan & Willy

Megan & Willy live in the harry house and have kindly shared their experience with us.

How have you found lockdown in a tiny house?

It has been really nice as we’ve spent lots of time outdoors. With the warmer weather we were usually outside by 7:30am which our son Harry loved! Now that it is cooler we enjoy lighting the fire, brewing a coffee and staying cozy in the house for a bit longer! The lockdown has motivated us to enclose our deck to create another great year round space.

Whats the best part about living in your tiny house?

To us it feels like an adventure! The space has a way of bringing you together. Being conscious of space we have to be mindful of what we buy and bring into the house which is a process we enjoy. Also due to the size of the tiny house we were able to incorporate more “lavish” items into the build that wouldn’t have been affordable on a larger scale. For example we love our cedar stained windows, custom made fireplace and our custom storage couch.

Whats the worst?

It seems to always be messy! Living with a toddler doesn’t help the matter. In saying that it is quick to clean up. We are also slowly thinking of ways to improve the space we have like shelving underneath the stairs and think that will help a lot. And of course there are times when an extra space would be “desirable” but that could just be us still adapting from many years of bigger houses!

How has life changed since moving into your tiny house?

We have a reasonably stress free financial situation because of going tiny which has become even more apparent in these current times. This has enabled us to make steps towards the life we want without the anchor of big financial debt. We also spend lots of time outdoors and are giving our son Harry the type of upbringing we want him to have.

Any tips for others looking to build or buy a tiny house?

I think the size of tiny houses makes it essential to utilise every square inch. It means design is crucial, and our tip would be to invest plenty of time into this phase. Take the time to visit other tiny houses and even stay overnight if possible. Stepping foot into an existing tiny house is the best way to get a gauge on the space. We are really grateful we put the investment into our design and planning as there is no obvious thing we would want to change now.
